La circulación de la moneda española en el norte de África y Levante en la Edad Moderna

Resumen:

    En el presente artículo se analiza el capital papel que jugó la moneda española en el activo comercio que durante los siglos XVI a XVIII se produjo entre los distintos estados europeos y los musulmanes del norte de África y el Levante mediterráneo. Asimismo, se estudia la situación del numerario norteafricano y del Imperio Otomano a comienzos del siglo XIX, magistralmente estudiado por Domingo Badía en su alter ego Alí Bey, el primer español y uno de los primeros europeos no musulmanes que entró en La Meca. Finalmente, se analiza la primera emisión de moneda marroquí fuera de su territorio, que se realizó en Madrid a finales del siglo XVIII.

Abstract:

    The present article analyzes the key role played by the Spanish currency in the active trade between Europeans and Muslims states of North Africa and Levant during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. It is studied also the North African and the Ottoman Empire money role in the early nineteenth century,  masterfully studied by Domingo Badía, in his alter ego Ali Bey, the first Spanish and one of the first non-Muslim Europeans who entered in Mecca. Finally, it is analyzed the first issue of Moroccan currency outside its territory, which was held in Madrid in the late eighteenth century.
